The Big Daddy Ancestral 7-Day Prayer Candle is created in loving honor of the grandfathers, great-grandfathers, patriarchs, providers, protectors, farmers, craftsmen, workers, storytellers, prayer warriors, and strong men whose lives helped build the foundation upon which their families still stand.

“Big Daddy” is more than a name. In many families, he was the elder everybody knew. He may have been a man of few words—but when Big Daddy spoke, everybody listened.

He may have been your grandfather by blood, or simply the elder man whose presence, protection, wisdom, and love made him family.

How to Use

1. Create a Place for Big Daddy
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

If appropriate to your spiritual tradition, place a photograph of your grandfather, great-grandfather, or family patriarch nearby, safely away from the flame.

If you are honoring several paternal ancestors, you may include their names together.

2. Write His Name
On a small piece of paper, write:

“In loving memory of Big Daddy: [Name].”

Beneath his name, write what you remember about him.

What did he teach you?

What did he always say?

What kind of work did he do?

What could he build or repair?

What made him laugh?

What stories did he tell?

What did he believe a person should stand for?

What did he leave behind that still lives within your family?

3. Speak His Name
Before lighting the candle, speak his name aloud.

If you are honoring paternal ancestors whose names have been lost through generations, you may acknowledge:

“The known and unknown fathers and grandfathers of my bloodline whose lives made mine possible.”

Their names may have disappeared from family memory, but their existence remains part of your family's story.

4. Light & Remember
Light your candle and remember his life, not simply his death.

Tell his stories.

Look through old photographs.

Cook something he loved.

Visit the land he once walked if appropriate.

Ask older relatives about him.

Write down the stories while there are still people here who remember them.

5. Pray for the Generations

Ancestral Reflection

While your candle burns, write down one story about Big Daddy.

Write his full name, where he was born, what work he did, what he believed, what he taught, what he loved, and something about him that future generations should know.

Record the little things too.

Sometimes the stories everyone assumes they will remember are the first ones lost when an elder passes.

Preserving those memories can become an inheritance of its own.

Candle Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children, pets, drafts, curtains, photographs, family documents, petitions, dried flowers, herbs, and other flammable materials. Always burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep the wick properly trimmed and discontinue use if the glass becomes cracked or damaged.
