The Grandfather's Prayer 7-Day Candle is created in honor of the strength, wisdom, protection, guidance, and prayers of the men we call Grandfather, Grandpa, Granddaddy, Papa, Pawpaw, Pop, Gramps, Big Daddy, and the many other names spoken with love from one generation to the next.

There is something powerful about a grandfather's prayer.

He may not always be the loudest person in the family. He may be the man sitting quietly at the head of the table, working before everybody else wakes up, checking the doors before bed, slipping a little money into a grandchild's hand, teaching somebody how to fix what is broken, or offering five words of wisdom that somehow stay with you for the rest of your life.

Some grandfathers pray aloud with a Bible in their hands. Others offer their prayers quietly while working, driving, farming, sitting on the porch, or lying awake thinking about the family they love.

This candle represents that covering—the prayer of a grandfather asking that his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, home, and family be protected, guided, provided for, prosperous, and prepared for whatever roads life places before them.

It may be burned by a grandfather praying over his family or by someone seeking the comfort and spiritual symbolism of a grandfather's loving prayer.

The intention is:

“May my family go farther than I went, have more opportunities than I had, and always remember where they came from.”

How to Use

1. Write the Names of Your Family
On a small piece of paper, write the names of the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or loved ones you wish to cover in prayer.

If there are too many names to write individually, you may simply write:

“My children, my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, and every generation that comes through my family.”

2. Write Your Grandfather's Petition
Beneath the names, write what you desire for them.

For example:

“May my family be protected wherever they travel. Give them wisdom, strength, good health, financial stability, loving homes, worthwhile opportunities, and the discernment to recognize both blessings and danger.”

3. Place Your Petition
Place your petition safely beneath or beside the candle.

Family photographs or meaningful keepsakes may be placed nearby if desired, but always keep them safely away from the flame.

4. Light & Call Their Names
As you light the candle, speak the names of the people on your petition.

You do not need elaborate words.

Sometimes a grandfather's entire heart can fit inside one sentence:

“Lord, watch over my family when I can't.”

5. Pray Daily
Return to your candle each day and pray over your family.

Read scripture, recite Psalms, use the prayer below, or simply speak from your heart about what you want for the generations coming after you.

Grandfather's Prayer

**“God, I place my family in Your hands.

My children.

My grandchildren.

My great-grandchildren.

The ones living close enough for me to see every day and the ones living so far away that prayer is sometimes the only way I can reach them.

Watch over them when I cannot.

When they leave home, go with them.

When they drive, ride beside them.

When they travel, protect their road.

When they enter classrooms, workplaces, hospitals, courtrooms, unfamiliar cities, or places where I cannot stand beside them, let protection arrive before they do.

Give them wisdom.

Not only education, but wisdom.

Teach them to recognize character.

Teach them to recognize opportunity.

Teach them to recognize danger.

Teach them that every open door does not need to be entered and every closed door is not necessarily a punishment.

Give them courage to make their own way without becoming ashamed of where they came from.

Bless the work of their hands.

Let them find meaningful work.

Let their businesses prosper.

Let their ideas create opportunities.

Let them own something.

Let them build something.

Let them save something.

Let them leave something behind.

Where I struggled financially, let them learn prosperity.

Where opportunities were denied to my generation, let doors open for theirs.

Where I made mistakes, let my lessons become their wisdom instead of their inheritance.

Let them have homes filled with peace.

Let them choose partners who love them well.

Let them raise children who know they are loved.

Let our family learn how to communicate before silence becomes distance.

Teach the men in my family that strength does not require pretending they never hurt.

Teach the women in my family never to diminish themselves so somebody else can feel powerful.

Teach every child that their name carries a history.

Let them know who their people were.

Let them know where they came from.

Let them remember the stories.

Let them keep the photographs.

Let them write the names on the back.

Let them ask the elders questions while somebody is still alive to answer.

And when my chair is someday empty, let what I taught them remain.

Let something I built still stand.

Let something I said still guide them.

Let something I sacrificed make their road easier.

Let somebody tell a story about me and make the younger ones laugh.

Most of all, let them know that I prayed for them.

Some of them before they were born.

Some of them before their parents were born.

Some of them before I would ever know their names.

As this candle burns, I place my family beneath divine protection.

Keep their children.

Let them go farther than I went.

Let them build upon what I started.

And wherever life carries them, may they always remember that somebody back home was praying for them.”**

Grandfather's Affirmation

“I speak protection, wisdom, strength, prosperity, peace, and opportunity over my family. May every generation build upon the good of the generation before it and create an even stronger foundation for those yet to come.”

Family Legacy

Consider using this candle as an opportunity to record something future generations should know.

Write down your grandfather's full name, birthplace, occupation, military service if applicable, skills, favorite sayings, family stories, recipes, land or property history, and the lessons he taught.

Ask him questions while you still can.

Record his voice.

Take the photograph.

Write down the story you've heard a hundred times.

One day, somebody who never had the opportunity to meet him may treasure those things more than anything money could buy.

Legacy is not only what a grandfather leaves to his family. It is what he leaves within them.

Candle Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children, pets, drafts, curtains, family photographs, Bibles, petitions, documents, dried flowers, and other flammable materials. Always burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep the wick properly trimmed and discontinue use if the glass becomes cracked or damaged.
