This is an all-purpose candle for those who understand Hoodoo not simply as something they do, but as a tradition shaped by family, survival, faith, ancestral memory, herbal knowledge, prayer, and the determination of Black people to create protection, healing, opportunity, and hope under circumstances designed to deny them all four.

How to Use

The In Hoodoo We Trust Candle may be used as an all-purpose prayer candle or placed on an ancestral or spiritual altar.

Write your full name on a petition paper. Beneath your name, write what you need: protection, prosperity, healing, wisdom, justice, opportunity, peace, strength, or another blessing.

You may also write:

“Beloved and benevolent ancestors of my bloodline, known and unknown, remembered and forgotten, stand with me in righteousness. Guide my hands, protect my road, and help me carry forward what deserves to survive.”

Place the petition beneath the candle in a safe location.

If you maintain an ancestral altar, you may place photographs, family names, obituaries, heirlooms, or a fresh glass of water nearby according to your personal practice.

Light your candle and pray.

Speak the names you know.

Remember the ones whose names you do not.

And give thanks that somewhere along your bloodline, somebody prayed hard enough for another generation to make it here.

I honor the hands that picked roots, prepared baths, dressed candles, prayed Psalms, swept doorsteps, carried charms, tended gardens, interpreted dreams, whispered prayers, and found ways to survive when survival itself was an act of resistance.

I honor the mothers who prayed over their children.
I honor the grandmothers who knew what to do.
I honor the fathers who protected their homes.
I honor the elders who remembered the old ways.

I honor those whose names are written in family Bibles and those whose names were stolen from the record.

May the wisdom that is meant for me find me. May the traditions that deserve to continue remain alive through my hands. May I have discernment enough to respect what I do not yet understand and humility enough to keep learning.

Protect my head. Protect my spirit. Protect my home. Protect my family. Protect my road.

Let no jealousy stop what God has ordained for me. Let no enemy determine my future. Let no closed door convince me there is no other road.

Where there is lack, show me the road toward provision.
Where there is confusion, give me wisdom.
Where there is danger, give me protection.
Where there is injustice, let truth stand.
Where there is sorrow, bring comfort.
Where there is opportunity, give me the courage to walk through the door.

May I never become ashamed of the people whose prayers helped carry me here.
